In the era of heightened regulatory enforcement, and with concerns over environmental protection increasing, the public is demanding comprehensive emergency response in the oil and gas industry. At the Canadian Energy Law Foundation’s 2017 Jasper Research Seminar, an annual event dedicated to the exploration of energy law topics, Stikeman Elliott Senior Counsel Allison Sears joined industry peers in examining various emergency response planning and reporting obligations, and outlining the necessary steps and legal issues in the aftermath of a major incident.
Papers from the Seminar are published as articles in the Energy Law Edition of the Alberta Law Review. Allison’s paper, co-written with Marianne (Chuck) Davies, Senior Manager, Legal Counsel Regulatory, Nexen Energy and Conor Chell, Legal Counsel, Upstream, Suncor Energy (with the assistance of Stikeman Elliott Associate Meaghan Simister) and entitled “The Alarm Bell is Sounding and the Regulator is at the Door: Emergency Response, Reporting, and Investigations in the Age of Heightened Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement”, is now available.
