This article examines the regulatory and legal issues surrrounding coalbed methane development in British Columbia. It discusses how regulators are responding to the challenges posed by the proliferation of coalbed methane development in the last decade, highlighting the applicable codes, guidelines, and government agencies involved in regulating coalbed methane. The authors conclude with a discussion of
some of the key issues relating to coalbed methane development, including challenges around First Nations, surface rights, and the environment.
